Nuit Blanche Proposal

Inbetweens is an interactive sculpture animation project that celebrates citizens as a city's essence. It places their influence in the context of infrastructure, architecture, transportation, and culture. The project involves five mutoscope devices, displayed for viewing and manipulation. These early animation viewing devices are constructed using hand operated rotary drums. Each drum displays a series of frames that come to life as the viewer winds them into motion. Within the machines, unmoving line drawings, significant to the city of London, wait to be brought to life by passersby. Participants are invited to remove frames for enhancement using mark-making materials provided. These images include parks, architecture, public transit, and community events. Tables are set out for those to create and socialise. After editing, frames are taken back to the device to be watched in real time. The result is a flickering of unique interpretations, which can be carefully explored by turning the crank at a decreased speed. The range of skill, age, and relationship to the city works to the advance of the animations, speaking to the driving force each resident provides in the development of the community of London.

In animation, inbetweening refers to the filler frames which smoothly transition one key frame into the next. These frames carry us into the next part of our story. There is a similarity in these inbetweens and the way we view the success of a city. The true test of livability lies within the utility and delight that our environment provides us as we move towards our collective goals. The moments between key events drive us in the direction of the next. These moments are carried by citizens. This project aims to remind that the city user is the tastemaker. The interactivity of this piece creates a visual of the differing and relative perspectives that shape our future. The city is a metaphor for us.

Stop Moments is a series of short stop- motion videos made using paper cut-out collage, craft supplies, and other substances. The videos pertain to personal memories as well as stories from others that took place at various sites in Dawson city YT. The videos were accessible through site-specific QR codes so the viewer could experience them while standing inside the memory site. This Project was funded and exhibited through the Yukon Riverside Arts Fest.
